This has been an interesting question for us these last couple of years. What’s more important? Appealing to the masses, or appealing to the hipsters? It’s a tough one. I have to say, we’ve definitely had better luck with the masses. We’ve sold cds like crazy, packed loads of clubs, and opened for great national acts. Yet, the Minneapolis music mafia still barely has us on their radar.
I like to play my songs for anyone who will listen and I’ll do anything it takes without sacrificing the music itself. But when it all comes down to it, I’m just NOT the new cool thing. I’d say our stuff is actually more the OLD cool thing. Most of what I love is inspired from the 60’s and 70’s. But for better or worse it’s obvious that real soul music isn’t what’s IN right now. However, I’d say many of us believe it’s time for a comeback!
So, I think I have finally decided that I just don’t care about that scene anymore. I love my fans, and I love that they don’t need me to be something I’m not. I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing. We’ll make the best music we know how to make, and maybe we’ll be doing it for the anti-hipsters. The people who just want good music without the drama and the fashion. I could have made up some story about my horrible up-bringing, and my 3 stints in rehab. Maybe that would be more interesting. But it wouldn’t make the music any better. So I’ll stick with the real story and just tell it to the people that want to hear it; there seem to be a lot of them even if they (we) are the silent majority. As far as the hipsters go, if they show up I’ll sing for them. Happily, and regret-free.
